One of my favorite observances is Black Music Month. Not that I don’t listen to “black music” during the rest of the year. Besides, our cultural influence is in pretty much all the major genres. But in this particular month, we get to highlight all the great contributers; our favorite musical movers and shakers of our time and the next. As of late, I’ve been jamming Asia Monqiue‘s Looking Glass EP like crazy. I was wondering how I could feature her in the blog just because, but I was like “this aint Greek related”. But as I did more research, I found out she is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. So here we are….featuring this pretty poodle and her amazing talent.
I ran across Asia earlier this year and kind of bookmarked her page for later. But more and more, I found myself running to this EP as my sound of solitude when I need to think, concentrate or get something off my chest. Her style and voice kinda remind me of Sza (who apparently is my doppleganger, but I don’t really see it. She’s gorgeous. lol. But that’s another story. I digress.)
Asia’s instrumentals are very edgy mixed with abstract grit, techy and sometimes cultural influences to balance out her clear and silky voice. Her experimental yet eccentric style of R&B is what guided me throughout the entire album. I’m more of a hip hop, old school R&B, big band and jazz gal myself. I hardly listen to current R&B, so I was thoroughly appreciative that she won me over with her eclectic and smooth arrangements. The songs that get the most repeat love are Solitude, Queen and her lead single Heroin. They might be yours too when you take a listen.
Tryna figure out where to find this EP? I got you! I posted her Soundcloud below if you want to check it out. Make sure you hit her up on Twitter, Facebook and wherever else to let her know you’re feeling her.
Hopefully we can get some more music from her soon. Also crossing fingers that we can get an interview with her at some point. I need to get my stuff together for that. But until then, enjoy the EP. And if you know anyone else (or yourself) who has some dope music and you’re D9, hit me up on Twitter and/or Facebook. I love listening to new music, but it has to be good. Don’t send me no half azzzzzzzzz tracks with wack rhymes or vocals on it. -_-. I’m serious. lol
Don’t forget to let me know what you think of Asia’s music! Until later, be easy fam!
