The Only Way To Tell If Greeks Are About That Life

What’s up Fam Bam! If you’re new to DPTaughtMe, welcome! This month we’ve been exploring  some pretty candid conversations around effective leadership in Greekdom and where/how we can improve in those areas. So far we’ve covered how Prophytes can be better mentors, how we can resurrect deference, and all the necessary things Neos need to hear, but rarely do. Since there’s been quite a bit of advice given out, I figured for this installment, I’d chill a bit (no pun intended) and do something a little more fun and practical.

Below you will find a few worksheets I’ve drawn up for you. My hope is that you’ll be able to use these templates to build chapter culture, create a true Big Sister/Big Brother bond with your younger members and serve as a reference as to why you joined your organization in the first place. NPHC Members who are TRULY about that life know that the only way to excellent organization is one that invest in each other. We’re trying to keep that in the forefront of everyone’s minds!

Prophyte and Neophyte Match Up Worksheet The first worksheet is a Prophyte/Neophyte Mentor MatchUp worksheet. People get along with folks they are compatible with. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean ya’ll are just alike. But it means you vibe on a high level based on some key characteristics that balance out your personality, interests, and values. This template will allow each party (mentor and metee) to break down exactly what they want out of the mentorship relationship and how they want to go about developing it. These are the most effective when they’re filled out at the beginning or end of the year (whenever new people are coming in). It gives the exec board time to look over the worksheets and do a proper evaluation of how to match members up with one another.

To get an even better match (and more understanding of the people in your chapter), have members take this personality test. It takes about 10 minutes. After you finish, it will tell that you closely identify with 1/16 personality types. The benefit of this dope quiz is that it allows you to get an understanding of why people function the way they do. Wonder why Jasmine is so shy but she’s a beast with the flyers? Or why Damian is always so calculated and uptight? This quiz will give you the inside scoop on certain behaviors and thinking processes. Now, it’s not an all-in-all quiz either, but it’s  start. Knowing these tidbits about your chapter will allow you to communicate better, function more effectively, and ultimately help you get to know each other on a deeper manner.  Plus, businesses use this test when they are looking to bring new people on their team. Results let employers know who will fit with the flow of their culture and helps them fill the void when they are lacking certain personalities they know will help take them to the next level.

2Prophyte and Neophyte Check-In WorksheetThe second worksheet is a Prophyte/Neophyte Mentor Check In worksheet. This template allows you to keep track of when you meet up for your mentoring sessions, what you discussed and most importantly, document your mentee’s and mentor’s accomplishments, progress and improvement areas. Doing this exercise at each meeting (whether it’s face to face, by phone, sliding in the DMs, whatever), will help you see the value in each other as well as the power of team work as a collective chapter. HIGH KEY – THIS is how you build deference folks. Coupling this worksheet with what you’ve laid out for your #GreekGoals for this year will help you align expectations, set benchmarks and really keep tabs on if you’re reaching your goals or just wasting time.

As I stated before, setting aside time doesn’t equate to spending 2-4 hours talking about Lord knows what. Don’t set up a time that isn’t conducive to your current class, work, family, religious, etc schedule. It has to fit with the groove of what you’re already doing. If it’s a 15 minute phone call, then so be it. If you have an hour for lunch twice a month, then do that. You don’t want to over extend yourself. Be realistic with your time, your capabilities, and expectations of yourself and the person you’re working with. Meet people where they are. Accept them where they are. Then build from there.
