It’s fair to say, we all know the nervousness of going on a job interview or the anxiety of showing up to a family function when we know only one person. Trying to join a fraternity or sorority is sort of a combination of both of those situations.
If you’re an aspiriant, you always hear the same ol, same ol rules about how to express your interest to the organization you wish to join. Be discrete. Do your research. Watch your GPA. Come to the events. While all of these to-dos are important, there are other factors to take into consideration before pledge your loyalty to a particular fraternity or sorority. Trying to get in can be a little intimidating, I’m not even going to lie. BUT, intimidation is only a state of mind.
If you’re already a member of Greek life, you know looking for aspiring members can be fun and frustrating at the same time. Current members will graduating. You’re worried about who’s going to carry on the torch for the upcoming year. And the scariest part, you hope your prophytes like who you picked. That can be intimidating in itself. But again…intimidation is just a state of mind.
Here are 8 practical ways Greek members and aspirants alike can approach recruitment in a more indepth and confident manner:
For the Interests & Aspirants
1) Before You Research, Soul Search
Before you get into any deep Greek research, take some time to “Soul Search”. Define what values are important to you. What makes you tick? What inspires you? What things drive you to be your best? Once you nail those down, do the research. See if those values align with the organization you’re seeking to join. When you’re clear in who you are and exactly what you stand for, it’s easier to see if the essence of the organization you wish to be apart of is parallel to your standards.
2) Be Present – In Places Other Than Greek Events
Being active in other student organizations not only helps refine your career experience, but it also shows us that you’re multifaceted. It means that you can serve as an asset to our organization through your unique talents, your connections, and your leadership capabilities. All these things help advance the cause and presence of an organization. Plus, it shows you’re not waiting on Greek life to make a name for you. You’re making a name for yourself!
3) Put Greeks on Probation
Just like in dating, everyone is not deserving of your time. Therefore, you need to be observant to see which organization is truly worthy of your time, effort and talents. Take note of different chapters. Look at their events, their member’s behavior, campus involvement, work ethic, even rewards. If it doesn’t align to what you expected, you can 1) look for an organization that does 2) find ways you can help improve and add value to the chapter.
4) Know Your Worth
As aspirants, Greeks automatically pose the question, ” What does this person bring the table?”. You need to ask the same thing. How will being involved in this organization enhance or improve your life? If you can’t think of anything that is worth while, maybe Greek life isn’t for you…and that’s okay. But if you do, meditate on the different things that make this organization uniquely beneficial to you and go for it!
For the Greek Members
5) Your Chapter IS a Business; Act Accordingly
What some Greeks fail to recognize is that our organizations are LITERALLY businesses. Which means, we have a brand and reputation to protect. In the corporate world, employers hire candidates that will represent them in the best way possible. Employers look for people who can strengthen their company through their distinct skillsets and contributions to company culture. Choose your candidates in the same way. Think strategically. And act accordingly. Your conduct can either attract or deter a great candidate.
6) Think Ahead
Make sure your prospective candidates can help maintain or improve the caliber of the image you have today. Think past your graduating sorors and frat brothers. Your neos won’t be neos for long. Choose potential members with good judgement. Seek someone who lives and breathes your mission statement not only within the organization, but in their personal lives as well. This will better help ensure your legacy lives on in a positive light.
7) Be Active- In Places Other than Greek Life
Just like the aspirants, it’s important to make your presence known in other student organizations. Sometimes, when aspirants see you in a less intimidating space, they are more likely to open up. This allows you to observe your interest in a different light, see them in a more relaxed state and really bond with them. It also allows you to gage where they can be useful within the chapter.
8) Identify Needs and Fulfill Them
To piggyback off the last topic, it’s important to identify the needs and weaknesses of the chapter. Maybe you have too many behind-the-scenes people and not enough socialites. Or maybe you have members who are great at creating ideas for events, but not enough people who are efficient at implementing plans. Once you define what your needs are and what you need to do to strengthen your weakness, find aspirants to fulfill those needs. Each chapter member has a special expertise they can exercise within the chapter. By utilizing everyone’s talents strategically, this will help recruit more qualified interests, which in turn keeps a strong and valuable legacy brewing on campus.
